Dawes Releases Thought-Provoking Video for ‘Feed the Fire’

The band also announced an extended 20-date North American tour for the fall.

In an attempt to create a safe space for belonging through music, on Monday (Oct. 1), Dawes released a music video for their social-media-inspired track “Feed the Fire.”

With gentle guitar chords and a hooky melody, the song offers thought-provoking lyrics contemplating the feeling of uneasiness and loneliness in a digital, social-media-fueled world. “Trading where I’m at for some future destination/ Working for attention I’ll eventually resent/ Trying to ignore some of the darker implications/ Of smiling for the camera with my hands in wet cement,” frontman Taylor Goldsmith sweetly recites.

For the new visual, all four members of the band (Goldsmith, Wylie Gelber, Lee Pardini and Griffin Goldsmith) are placed in a blue-screen grid where they show different facial expressions throughout the song — kicking off with forced smiles that eventually become strained. The video also features a series of internet memes and other viral clips.

 

“Everyone is telling bands, writers, and artists to share share share. If you don’t share, nobody will care. If you don’t use social media, you don’t exist. That feeling/image struck me hard when I first heard Taylor’s lyrics,” Matthew Daniel Siskin — the music video’s director — shared of his own interpretation of the song. “We’re all working for constant attention, without giving it a single thought as to ‘why’ we’re doing it. Thankfully, the band trusted me enough to sit awkwardly in front of a camera over and over again. Forced to smile. But, as artists in 2018 — I’m pretty sure they’re already used to that,” Siskin added.

In addition to the new music video, Dawes also announced 20 new dates for their North American tour.
